What We Can Do to Prevent Radioactive Uptake
A few months back, an NBC Los Angeles news report covered a story on the radiation from Fukushima now being found in kelp beds along the western coast of the US . Many people have asked about if this radiation is affecting us. The answer is yes, there is some effect the extra radiation is having on us, but luckily, there are ways to counteract it to protect our health.Over the past 6 months, people have been coming into my practice with more unusual problems. Through Nutrition Response Testing (NRT), I have found the underlying issue is radiation exposure. My colleagues of NRT in Seattle, as well as parts of California, are reporting similar results. While there are countless sources of radiation in our environment, this new influx of radiation related issues is coinciding with the time that radiation particles in the ocean currents were expected to arrive on the west coast.
Conflicting reports exist on weather the increased radiation levels in the ocean have any significant implications for health. Unfortunately, there is really no “safe-limit.” The human body is extremely sensitive to these particles. From what I have seen and tested in my clinic, the increase in radiation is affecting many of us to some degree. While this is highly disconcerting, the more awareness we have of it, the more we can do to protect our bodies. First let’s look at the symptoms one may experience.
Kinds of Symptoms being Produced
Here are the symptoms I am seeing quite often these days in my clinic:
- thyroid disorders
- frequent and prolonged colds or other infections
- headaches and nausea
- sudden irregularities in menstrual cycles
- unusual skin issues
- diarrhea, or constipation, poor appetite
- unexplainable nerve pain, back pain, joint pain
- fatigue and malaise
- increased hair loss or graying
- dizziness and tinnitus
What Can We Do to Protect Ourselves?
Some basic preventative measures can be taken to improve overall health, as well as add some specific foods and supplements to ward off the effects of radiation. Here are a few:
- Reducing sugar, and simple carbohydrates, while increasing green vegetables and protein are effective for raising the level of adrenal function. The adrenal glands’ hormones slows the production of free radicals, and inhibits the growth of cancers and carcinogens.
- Include more good fats in your diet such as avocado, coconut, and olive oil to keep your cell membranes and immune system strong.
- Eat more fermented foods such as miso and sauerkraut, as these have the ability to neutralize the effect of environmental pollution including radiation.
- Seaweeds (not from the Pacific) absorb radiation away from the body. Mushrooms such as shiitake, reishi, and maitake also protect the body from the carcinogenic effects of radiation.
- In terms of general supplementation, add in chlorophyll containing powders such as chlorella, spirulina (not from the Pacific), etc. Supplementing with vitamin D has also been shown to have protective effects.
Adrenal adaptogens such as siberian ginseng and ashwagandha also are provide a very good first line of defense by boosting the adrenal response towards stress on the body. All of these are easily available at your local health food stores.
