Overcoming Thyroid Disorders
January 17, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Join Srinika at this special workshop where she will be discussing some of the underlying causes of thyroid dysfunction, and how to reverse it using beneficial foods and supplements that support the thyroid.
Srinika Narayan:
Hi, I’m Srinika Narayan, and I am a Chinese medicine practitioner. I also do techniques called nutritional analysis. I’ve been a Chinese medicine practitioner for about 15 years now, and for the past seven years I’ve branched out a lot into a technique that’s called nutritional analysis. I branched out because I found that it’s helped me with some very difficult cases. Autoimmune issues, and cases that are thought to be non-reversible.
Tonight, we’re gonna talk about thyroid issues. Because thyroid issues are generally thought to be, “Oh, once you have thyroid issues you have it for life.” But what I found is, that’s not necessarily the case. And through nutritional analysis, I’m able to identify what’s really behind thyroid issues. What are some of the problems, and what can we do about it? So, we’ll focus on some of the things that are underlying causes, and we’ll focus on some solutions. Some of these solutions are nutritional, some are gonna be herbal, some are gonna be lifestyle type of things like reducing exposure to certain kinds of things.
To start, thyroid issues are one of the main things that come in my office. Probably the top three. Some people know they have thyroid issues, they have been tested and they know it and they want to heal it naturally, or at least reduce their need for medications. But some people come in, and they don’t know they have a thyroid issue. The tests were normal, but they know they have some symptoms of something going on.
These symptoms could be things like being tired, weight gain, anxiety, depression, brain fog, constipation. Those are all common thyroid issues. And most people don’t have all of those problems, but will have some variety or some of those issues. And so, generally across the board these do test out to be thyroid issues. A lot of people talk about adrenal fatigue. Which, there is such a thing adrenal fatigue, but most of the time, for women anyways, it’s more of thyroid issues than adrenal fatigue.
Back to the western diagnosis. What they do is they check TSH levels. This is just one hormone. TSH sometimes shows to be in range, and people don’t realize that there is any problem going on. But TSH actually isn’t even put out by the thyroids. It’s put out by another gland, and this is just one hormone of many that needs to be checked. So, generally, most thyroid issues go unnoticed. Not unnoticed. People do have symptoms, but they go unrecognized that it’s a thyroid issue.
When someone comes to my office, what we do is we basically check, well what organs are the most important organs or going on in terms of your symptoms? And usually, it is the thyroid. And there’s plenty of things nutrition can do to help with this issue. And this goes if the person has hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, goiter, nodules, Grave’s disease, Hashimoto’s. Generally, the underlying causes are the same. We’ll talk about these underlying causes.
These things aren’t spoken about much in western literature, because they don’t really know what the underlying causes are. What they do for hypothyroid is basically give some hormones to support that thyroid. Basically, it’s just taking the place of the hormones that the thyroid should be making. If a person has hyperthyroid, what they do is they’ll give some medications to kinda drug that thyroid to dampen it down. Or they’ll just remove the thyroid if it’s too active, or radiate it and basically leave it a dead organ. This isn’t useful either. This is not healing the thyroid. It’s just making sure that the levels don’t go to dangerous levels. And then after that, you have to take thyroid hormone.
So, even if you go to most alternative medical practitioners, they too don’t know what is causing this. They look at a lot more tests and might figure out, “Okay, let’s balance out these thyroid using certain rules.” But they’re not necessarily healing the thyroid by figuring out what’s behind it. It’s so important to identify what’s actually going on, because for there you can start making some changes.
Through nutritional analysis, I’ve gotten a lot of answers as to what’s behind the scenes. I’ll start talking about them now. I’ll talk about them kind of in the order that they come up in terms of importance. Number one, in terms of thyroid, mercury is the biggest issue I’ve seen as coming up for the fibroid. And basically, we get this through different ways but the most common is leaky dental amalgams.
Dental amalgams have basically been, I think, the worst modern medical invention. Filling cavities with these mercury fillings. Many doctors and dentists will say, “Oh, they’re inert, they don’t leak.” That’s completely incorrect. They do leak passively. Little by little over time. If you drink a hot beverage, they vaporize a little bit and it gets not your system. If you chew something, you know when we eat, little, little bits get into our system, and the thyroid is right there. So, it goes and latches on.
Mercury mimics iodine to some extent, and it goes and kind of fills up the iodine receptors that are looking for iodine to work, but then instead they get mercury. And then what happens? The thyroid can’t produce the thyroid hormone it’s supposed to. And of course, mercury is toxic, so the body starts to react against it and starts to fight it trying to get it out. This can lead to more of an autoimmune condition, where the body is kind of fighting with its own self. It’s fighting with itself for a reason, but it’s causing problems.
And so, next to mercury … Next to amalgams is also vaccine. People my age when we were young, childhood vaccines were filled with the thimerosal, which is mercury. Nowadays luckily kids don’t get thimerosal in their vaccines, but adult vaccines still have thimerosal. And again, this is a massive amount of mercury that gets injected right into our bloodstream, and the thyroid is a perfect magnet for it. It can go elsewhere too. Mercury can cause a lot of different problems, but thyroid problems is a big one.
Third, fish intake. Here in the bay area, we eat a lot of sushi and fish in general. A lot of these fish have high mercury levels. Then government doesn’t necessarily tell us just how high. They make sound like, “Oh, just have it once a week, it’s fine.” For most people, even once a week of these high mercury fish is just way too much. And again, this mercury gets into our system and can latch on different places. Thyroid being one of them.
The fourth big way it gets in is in utero. Basically, if a mother has amalgams or is eating fish, then these things get passes on in utero, and then it enters the kid’s body even before they are born, and it can cause problems.
So, that’s far and away number one is mercury causing issues. I’ll talk a little bit more about how to work with mercury in the thyroid. Generally, for something like that I do suggest go see a qualified health professional, because you’re removing heavy metals and there’s a process to it.
The second big thing I see in thyroids these days, and this is over the last three years, is radiation. And it’s a nuclear radiation. So, here on the West Coast, we’ve gotten bombarded with radiation from Fukushima. It’s come in, and the thyroid is also a big place it latches on to. So, we’re getting exposed, it’s going into our thyroids, and again causing problems. Again, taking up the space that iodine should be taking against a hot particle. The body doesn’t like it. It starts to react against it, and then what we have, again, autoimmune issues.
I suggest across the board people take something like spirulina. It tends to pull out radiation. Seaweed like Kombu, of course not from the Pacific Ocean, but from other oceans, and Eleuthero ginseng also known as Siberian ginseng. It really strengthens the body against this kind of radiation.
Next, I will say electromagnetic frequencies are probably the third thing that bother thyroids. So, this could mean cell phones, routers, computers, smart meters, I think the big one would be cell phones. We’re around it so much it’s sometimes in our pockets or right next to us all day, and there’s lot of people who sleep with their cell phones on. I had a case of a midwife. She always has to be by her cellphone, ’cause she is just in call all the time. She sleeps with it on at night right next to her, it’s always right next to her. And her thyroid it was showing up cellphone is an issue, and it was just not resolving not resolving and I was like, “Please get a landline and forward your calls at least at night.”
And finally, she did this and wow, such a difference it made right away. Her thyroid just calmed down. It was just getting so inflamed by being constantly exposed to that cell phone. The cell phone doesn’t have to be on, it can just be or in use. If it’s on, it’s next to you, it’s emanating things, both cellular and Wi-Fi frequencies and it’s dangerous.
Smart meters are also a big thing, these are PG&E’s electric meters. This is how they measure how much electricity is being used, and sometimes they are right outside people’s bedroom or living room. Or if you’re in a multiunit building there’s several of them, there could be 50 of them not very far from you, just a couple of floor down. These things are very strong and emanate serious amounts of EMFs and I’ve seen it over and over affect thyroids.
Check where your smart meter is, that’s what I always recommend to people. Know where it is, if it’s somewhere that’s kind of near a guest room, that you’re not around, okay, fine. But of it is right outside your bedroom or underneath in the garage right below your bedroom or your Livingston, I generally tell people, “Call PG&E and get it removed, or at least buy a cover for it.” There’s plenty of EMF covers or smart meter overs you can get to cover this thing. Because they are very strong and very dangerous. No one’s really talking about them, but this shows up all the time actually. It’s shocking. It shows up all the time as problematic for many situations and no one even knows what smart meters are.
Routers are a problem too. See where your router is, try not to let it be in a place where you hang out a lot, or where you use the computer a lot because then you get router energy plus your own computer Wi-Fi energy and they kind of amplify each other. It’s best to put a router somewhere you don’t hang out too much, and definitely best if it’s not your bedroom.
Another thing you can do is have your router on a timer and have it just go off at night when you go to sleep so you’re just to exposed to it, and have it come on in the morning. So, that’s a big one too. Computers. Generally, computers aren’t such a problem unless you keep using it right directly on your lap, then it really is a problem. But otherwise, just try to use laptops on a table. It’s so much better, and avoids a lot of problems.
Food sensitivities. Thyroids have their own kind of sensitivities to certain foods. Usually, it’s not the foods that are causing the bulk of the thyroid issue, but they do affect the thyroid. Many people already know that gluten, especially wheat, tends to really depress the thyroid. Not in everybody, but in many people. Soy does the same thing. Soy kind of mimics estrogen. And there is a correlation between estrogen and thyroid. That’s why women get thyroid issues much more than men. So, soy does show up quite a bit for thyroid issues.
Sugar. Of course, sugar’s a problem for every organ. But too much sugar can really disturb the thyroid. And excess coffee as well. And excess can mean different things to different people. For some people, even one cup a day is too much. For some people, they can handle one cup, but two cups a day is too much. But it does come up often as a burden to the thyroid.
Next thing is blood sugar problems really affect the thyroid. And it can be a cycle, because if your thyroid is off, it can create blood sugar problems. But then having an off thyroid, it creates blood sugar problems but then blood sugar issues can bug the thyroid, it works both ways. And so, for people who that comes up, I generally tell them, “Okay, let’s really make sure you’re spacing out your meals with proteins at each meal, some fat at each meal, and of course avoiding sugar, refined carbohydrates.” Because, that can really stress out the thyroid. There are herbs that are very helpful for helping blood sugar issues. Bitter melon. It’s actually a food, you can eat it, but it’s pretty bitter. You can also take it in tincture form or pill form. And then there’s an herb called Gymnema, which is also very helpful in just controlling blood sugar.
And just controlling blood sugar can make a big difference in terms of just not stressing out that thyroid. The thyroid works in conjunction with the other hormonal organs such as the adrenal glands, and the pancreas. So, if the adrenals and pancreas are doing well, then the thyroid just has less pressure on it, less work to do.
Alright, next thing that the thyroid’s very sensitive to is chlorine. Interesting it comes up quite often. It usually doesn’t come up just for your average person, but if this person is a swimmer, or they use these Clorox wipes a lot, or they are in hot tubs a lot, chlorine does come up. It’s usually not from drinking water, unfiltered water, it’s from inhaling chlorine. It gets in to the bloodstream, and it gets right in to the thyroid. In that’s case, what I found to be very helpful is chlorella, which is an algae, and just small amounts, large amounts of chlorella can cause other problems. But just small amounts of chlorella taken on a somewhat regular basis if you’re a swimmer of a hot tubber can help keep the thyroid clean of chlorine.
And then there is things like GMOs show up, and these are in canola oil, corn products, kind of. It’s hard to avoid them if you go out to eat, they’re always cooking GMO oils. Pesticides show up a fair amount, artificial sweeteners, these flavor enhancers. Those things like natural flavors. Those aren’t natural flavors, those are chemicals that can affect the whole system but definitely thyroid.
Heavy metals from air pollutants and brown rice. People who eat a lot of brown rice, it tends to bring in arsenic, sometimes cadmium and lead, these can latch on to the thyroid. So, beware of eating brown rice every day, and always wash brown rice before cooking.
Memory foam pillows interestingly enough, this chemical shows up a lot in the thyroids. Memory foam beds aren’t great, but at east your nose isn’t right on the bed. But it is right on the pillow eight hours a day, and these things off gas forever. You may not smell it, but if they off gas forever, and little by little that particular … It’s toluene 2-4 is the name of the chemical. It just comes to the thyroid and latches on and causes problems. So, people with memory foam pillows I said, “Try out some other natural pillows, because memory foam pillows are bad news.
Things to do for these things. Keep your liver clean. So, the liver is the big filter in the body and just keeping the liver clean helps let the thyroid detox naturally. So, vegetables of course are great for the liver. Cruciferous vegetables in particular are very helpful. This would be like cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, beets are very good for the liver. And there’s lot of herbs that are helpful for the liver. Milk thistle is the most commonly known one, and basically even if you go to regular health food store, they’ll have all kinds of liver cleanse pill with different herbs in it. Take them on a regular basis just today’s day and age, livers get clogged so easily. So, even just a small amount of these herbs on regular basis can do a lot of good.
Fluoride is another thing that comes up for thyroids. It doesn’t come up as often as I thought, but here and there it certainly does. Again, chlorella seems to be pretty good at pulling out fluoride. And then what also comes up is opportunistic yeasts and parasites and viruses. These are usually secondary to the toxicities. But hey, there’s toxicities get in our thyroid, and they kind of beat the thyroid down, and then in come these other things like, “Woo party!” And they have a blast in there. And then of course, the immune system is trying to get them out and attacking them, and they’re in the thyroid, so then, voila, it’s right for an autoimmune issues in the thyroid.
Many people may have heard that there is Epstein–Barr virus, which is very associated with Hashimoto’s disease. Okay, you can take something that’s antiviral, it will help, but better yet, most people actually have Epstein–Barr virus in our system. It’s usually not something you just caught and oh, my gosh. It’s something that’s in our system that we shouldn’t really allow to get too high. And there are ways to do that, it’s just pulling out toxicities these viruses go down, and they’re not so intense.
Last big thing that I see that affects the thyroid are scars on the body, especially in the midline. This is something that not many people know or practitioners know about, but basically scars on the body can create a nervous system interference, or a meridian interference. In Chinese Medicine, there’s things called meridians or channels of energy. And the ones on the middle of the body are big channels of energy. So, scars in the midline could include a belly button piercing, or definitely hysterectomy, or C-section, an episiotomy scar that just didn’t heal well basically. People may have no idea this is actually affecting their thyroid, but thyroid is on the midline. So, if there’s some interference going on, it affects how much energy actually gets to the thyroid to make it work correctly.
There are ways to correct this. Just taking some sesame oil and rubbing it on these scars daily for a couple of months generally will correct it, and here in my office I have a cold laser that we do that also helps to neutralize these scars, so they’re not such energy blockages.
Alright, any questions so far? Okay, alright great.
Well then, you know in terms of working on the thyroid itself. Some of these suggestions, they are easy enough, safe enough to do on oneself like cleaning out the liver, periodically, and of course reducing EMFs as much as possible, small amounts of chlorella. You can do that all yourself. Some of these things like the heavy metals, they need a practitioner to actually kind of work with you on it. And food wise, the big things I kind of mentioned, have balanced protein meals each meal. Have some foods with iodine, selenium, magnesium, calcium. This selenium you can get from Brazil nuts you can get it from fish, but again, I’ve warned people about at the very least Pacific fish, but also kind of the high mercury fish, and magnesium. Dark leafy greens have a lot of magnesium in it. Yeah. it’s interesting the thyroid likes magnesium as well. I found through nutritional analysis. I didn’t realize that, but a lot of them test well for magnesium like deficiencies going on.
Omega-3s are important, flax seed oil, Krill oil, grass fed beef or butter is very helpful, getting enough Vitamin D from sunlight’s the best, but also of course Vitamin D supplement, liver-cleansing foods I mentioned vitamin B is helpful as well. Vitamin B generally helps in your adrenals, but anything you do to help the adrenals is also going to just take some pressure of the thyroid.
Herb wise, you may have heard of things called adaptogenic herbs. So, these are herbs that basically mostly help the adrenal glands actually. They’re herbs like ginseng. What happened here? Oh, okay. They’re herbs like Rhodiola, Holy Basil, Ashwagandha, all great herbs. And these are generally the herbs that functional medicine doctors generally recommend, take these herbs, they are very helpful. They help the adrenals, they help take some of the pressure off of the thyroid, but they are kind of like just managing things, they’re just managing the thyroid while we’re working on the root cause. They’re not really a cure in and of themselves, but they will make you feel better temporarily while these other things are being detoxed.
Alright. And so, you may be wondering how does nutritional analysis work, how have I figure out what I figure out? Well we’re gonna do a demo to show how this procedure works. I’ve really enjoyed doing nutritional analysis because I got into it because it worked on me. I had a health issue with my digestive tract years ago and this kind of practitioner helped me a lot. No one could figure out what it was, and she was able to muscle test me and say, “You have some artificial sweetener in your diet, and it’s creating this problem.” And I actually didn’t even know I was ingesting artificial sweetener. I was like, “What? This method can’t be right.”
But then I went home, and I looked on my protein counter I’d been taking for a year, and sure enough in this small print, it had sucralose in it. I didn’t even know what that was at the time, but it’s basically Splenda. And this one was, “Oh my gosh, I’ve been poisoning myself. This woman knew. I didn’t even know I was ingesting this.” From then on, I was like, “I have to learn this technique.” Since I’ve learned it, it’s just been the lifesaver for myself and so many people I’ve been able to help, that I’ve really would not have known what is going on otherwise.
And so, I’ll do a demo and show how it’s done. It’ll give an idea of how this works. The procedure’s all Muscle Testing. Many practitioners use it and I use it in this particular way. So, I’ll have my office assistant, Reese come up. I will move this to the side. Okay.
So, Reese, let’s say she’s a patient coming in and she has low energy and weight gain recently. Well what caused it? We don’t know. We don’t know that it’s the thyroid. Maybe it’s adrenals, maybe it’s something else, but we wanna check what organ is responsible. So, I’ll have her hold out her arm and just have her match my pressure. Okay, perfect, she’s pretty strong. So, now what I’m gonna do is touch different organs that are generally related to weight gain or energy, and see where her arm gets weak, and that will give me an idea. That’s the organ that’s involved. So, we’ll do the common organs for those issues. Let’s see, is it her liver? No. Is it her adrenal glands? And I’m touching her adrenal glands. Is it pancreas? That’s common one. No. Okay, is it thyroid? Ahuh, her arm is weakened. So, that’s how we know it’s her thyroid.
So, how do I know that? Because when I touched the organ that has a weakness, her body doesn’t like it. It sends energy to protect that weak organ, and when it sends energy there, it’s taking energy from her arm. And so, when that happens, when I press down, her arm drops, and that gives me the signal. That the weak organ in relation to these symptoms. So, we’ve figured out it’s her thyroid. From there, how am I gonna figure out well, what is bothering that thyroid, what is up with it?
Alright, I have different vials here, and these vials have common heavy metals, common chemicals, they’re just small, small amounts there like homeopathic vials. But the energy of these common heavy metals, common chemicals are in there as well as common food sensitivities. From here, I can put these vials on her and test out each one and see, okay, what is it that her thyroid is reacting to? For her it may not be everything, it’s a specific thing. So, one by one, I’ll test out the food sensitivities. And is it dairy? No, alright. One by one I can try all of them. Alright, is it wheat? Ahuh, okay. It’s showing that yes, wheat is a problem for her thyroid, okay –
Speaker 2:
How did it show that?
Srinika Narayan:
Well, so her thyroid is reacting to the energy of this vial.
Speaker 2:
Are you putting it next to the thyroid?
Srinika Narayan:
I could put it next to thyroid, or I could have her just hold it and I touch the thyroid. So, the thyroid’s reacting. It’s like, “Oh, not wheat, that’s my nemesis.” And it’s reaching and then the body again has to send energy to protect that thyroid. And then when I push down, it’s weak because it’s sending a lot of energy into protecting that thyroid. And this is happening on a very subtle level, but it’s enough that her arm will actually drop and give me the clue.
So for her, wheat is, we don’t know if it’s the issue, but it’s one of the issues. From there I’ll go through all of the heavy metals and we find out it will that it’s … And it’s cellphone. And so, that’s not exactly heavy metal, but it’s in that category. Okay, so wheat and cellphone is an issue. And then we go through all of the common chemicals, and I’ll do chlorine, and okay. So, we have three answers here. Wheat, chlorine, as well as cellphone.
So, okay I can ask her, “Are you a swimmer or … You are. Okay,” very common. Yeah, breathe in chlorine, it gets into thyroid, gets stuck, kinda pushes out the iodine. Wheat, I would suggest just avoid for now. Avoid for a few weeks or at least cut down as much as possible. And then cell phone, do you sleep with your cell phone on at night?
Reese:
Yes.
Srinika Narayan:
Okay, that’s definitely a problem. The body needs to rest during that time just being exposed to the cellphone in your room is too much. So, can you put it on airplane or just off altogether? Yeah, great. And do carry it in your pocket at all with you?
Reese:
Sometimes.
Srinika Narayan:
Okay. Avoid. Yeah, keep it in a purse or away from you just a little bit. That will make a big difference. But we do have to figure out what to do about the chlorine.
Okay, I kind of know that chlorella tends to work for chlorine, not always, but for the most part. So, I’ll grab some chlorella and have her just hold it, and then touch her thyroid and much stronger. It’s just that even just holding the chlorella, the energy of it, actually the body knows, the body’s like, “Oh, yes, that would be great.” And so then the thyroid is much, much stronger. Okay, we can say alright, we’ll start her on some chlorella, and the chlorella’s gonna start pulling that chlorine out, we’re gonna have this item receptors that are open and looking for their real match, which is iodine. So then, we’ll try, okay, let’s try some iodine and see if she needs that as well. And yes, very strong. Okay, her body likes that. So, we’ll have her do both of those.
And thyroid seemed to like magnesium, let’s see if her thyroid … No, doesn’t need it, not now anyways. So, we will leave the magnesium off. Okay, thank you.
So, basically that’s how this technique works. It’s just energetic, the body actually knows what it wants, what’s going on, it’s telling us. The body has an innate intelligence that is actually much smarter than our conscious minds and much smarter than blood tests actually, which can be somewhat misleading and not really show us what’s really going on. And I found great results with this technique, and it’s very hard to know exactly what’s going on, but this technique can actually show us some of these things that are going on.
Any questions about how this works so far? Okay, great.
So, yes, those are a few tips and through this, you can get rid of a burning firewood condition if you hit it right when it start happening, it’s so much easier to just get rid of, you don’t need medication. But if someone’s already on medication, we can certainly lessen the medication, they take, or if they are just on a low dose of medication, then it’s possible, little by little to wean off of it once the thyroid starts to heal. That’s it.
